An Introduction

Ed Castro

F&PA: Music & EICL Co-Coordinator

Also: US Advisor
B.M. Manhattan School of Music; M.M. Yale University; D.M.A., University of Washington

Ed joined the EPS Fine and Performing Arts (F&PA) team in the fall of 2017. Since then, he has worked to create a broad array of experiences for student engagement with instrumental music school-wide. Working with a supportive F&PA team and committed students, Ed helped clear a path for students to engage in instrumental music of several genres while engaging topics about representation and perspectives not often represented in our music classrooms.

Because of his work in decolonizing his classical music curriculum, Dr. Castro eventually joined the Equity, Inclusion, and Compassionate Leadership (EICL) office at EPS. At first, he was assisting the Coordinator of that office as needed. As he became more active and involved, he served as Interim Coordinator and, eventually, Co-Coordinator. The combination of equity and inclusion work within the art spaces was common for Dr. Castro. However, the opportunity to work as EICL Co-Coordinator institution-wide has been a different and welcomed challenge for Ed.

Dr. Castro has been teaching instrumental music since 1998. In addition to his position at EPS, he serves as a lecturer and affiliated artist at Pacific Lutheran University and briefly served as a trumpet instructor at Seattle Pacific University.

Ed is a founding member of the Mosaic Brass Quintet, a member of the Lyric Brass Quintet of PLU, and regularly performs as a freelance trumpeter for groups such as the Tacoma Opera Orchestra, Tacoma City Ballet Orchestra, The Cathedral Brass at St. James Cathedral, and The Seattle Symphony.
